Nature's Cathedral

These paintings are part of a series called Nature’s Cathedral which uses British Columbia’s forests as a source of phenomenon and inspiration.

These compositions are based on the perspective of looking upward at tree canopies. A combination of natural light, expanding space, and shimmering colour creates an effect common in the experience of cathedral interiors called dematerialization. This is where the structure of the space becomes intangible and/or less important then the experience of it.

Pinned-Up
This series borrows from print as a way to examine the discourse of originality in painting. By borrowing subject matter, entropic colouration and multiplicity from print, painting can evolve through self-reflection. These paintings appropriate images of the idealized women widely known as pin-up girls. The paintings are realistic copies of these printed illustrations. However, the context around the figure is edited out. The replaced empty space represents the imaginatory realm this kind of female representation occupies. Within each painting a mid-century pin up girl is duplicated either in an assemble line or mirrored arrangement.

Hypocrisy of Violence or Contorted Gun Series

Hand drawn contortions of real world guns with a humorous surrealism. These paintings are from a fascination with the wood & metalwork, mechanics and overall design of guns. In the cartoony “rubber hose” rationality, these firearms work. And upon firing, they’d usually shoot themselves. Therefore, and among many other interpretations, these paintings point out the hypocrisy of violence.
